A book about true heroism by J. Howe
I have read many books on or about the Navy Seals, some better than others. Quite often I don’t finish the books as they are poorly written or just get plain boring. This is by far the best Seal book ever written. In fact I put this up with “Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills” as the top 2 books ever written about our soldiers.
Everything in this book was relevant. Many books on Seals stray off on several side notes. This book does stray a few times on how to becomes a Seal, Marcus’ background etc. but it all ties together very well.
The background story about how to become a Seal was short and precise. Like I said earlier I have read about this process many times but I learned new things about the process in this book that wasn’t covered in all the others I’ve read.
Then when you get to the mission it gets incredible. I won’t give anything away but it gets action packed. Some of these men gave their lives for us and I think this book does a wonderful job letting the world know of their heroism and sacrifices they made for our country.
I highly recommend this book to anyone
Couldn’t put it down by Neal E. Cadorette
The story was so riveting that I couldn’t put it down. I often wonder why people read fiction books when real heroism, such as that displayed by Marcus and his lost comrades, is so much more interesting. When Marcus writes about his training, it gives you an appreciation of just how dedicated and tough one has to be to get through it. Once the story of the mission begins, I just had to see what happens next and how it all turns out. Although Marcus’ take on liberals and the press may seem a little harsh, the truth hurts. Marcus and Patrick Robinson have written a great war story with real heroes. These are real American heroes that have done incredible things. Unfortunately, these stories are only rarely told and we don’t hear enough about the heroism of our soldiers, sailors and airmen.
Best Combat Genre Book I Have Read Since Blackhawk Down by J. Canestrino
I have read several of the more popular combat genre books over the last few years, Thunder Run, Jarheads, Not a Good Day to Die, etc. and I think Lone Survivor is one of the best I have read. I would have given it 4.5 stars if I could have. If anything is lacking, it is the just the quality of the narrative. The story itself is engrossing, motivational and heartfelt. It makes you realize that anyone who has shown the fortitude to make it to the end of SEAL training deserves a great deal of respect.
MUST READ by W. BEDDOE
I recently finished reading Marcus Luttrell’s story “Lone Survivor”. Marcus (Navy Cross), a Navy SEAL with SEAL Team 10 in Afghanistan, recounts the horrific engagement with the Taliban and the heroics of his teammates as they fought back to back high in the mountains against an enormous enemy force in Operation Red Wing (2005). Marcus and his team were extremely upset that the Taliban were responsible for the killing of Marines in the area and were intent on putting a stop to it.
The first half of the book, an insightful story itself, takes the reader to the beaches of Coronado California where only the very best survive the rigerous training hopeful SEALs endure. After graduating and receiving the SEAL Trident, dozens more skills courses and qualifications follow before Marcus deployes to Afghanistan with his SEAL teammates.
“Lone Survivor” is one of the best stories I’ve ready that portrays the patriotism, dedication, talent, and devotion of the finest young men America has to offer. Fighting ruthless enemies in a foreign land under restrictive ‘rules of engagement’ provides for a dilemma for SEAL Team 10.
Back home in East Texas, Marcus’ folks receive the news that he is MIA. You will read about how Texans come together to support their neighbors while waiting for further news.
Hand Salute to the men of SEAL Team 10 and all others lost in Operation Red Wing in Afghanistan. Gone, but not forgotten.
Buy the book, it’s a very powerful MUST READ.
